Barely weeks after the assault of doctors and nurses at a Dombivli civic hospital triggered a statewide protest by the medical fraternity, another doctor has allegedly been attacked at a private hospital in Kalyan East after an argument with a patient’s son over treatment.
The Kolsewadi police have registered an FIR against Vinit Jaywant Deshmukh for allegedly assaulting Dr Yogendra Jaiswal, a 41-year-old orthopaedic consultant at Bhanujyot Hospital, late Saturday night.
According to Jaiswal’s complaint, the patient, Jaywant Deshmukh, aged around 60-70, arrived with his son at around 10.45-11 pm with complaints of lower-back pain. Jaiswal examined him, prescribed medicines and explained the dosage, dietary precautions and duration for which a bandage or support was to be used.
The patient’s son allegedly kept questioning the doctor about the treatment and spoke to him disrespectfully. When Jaiswal asked him to use appropriate language, he allegedly became aggressive, abused the doctor, punched him twice in the face and hit him elsewhere on the body before holding him by the neck. Other patients and relatives intervened and separated the two. The incident was captured on CCTV.
Dr Jatin Harbada, owner of Bhanujyot Hospital and a consultant physician, said Jaiswal had patiently explained the treatment.
“The doctor had patiently explained the treatment to the patient and his son. The patient had come with complaints of back pain and the doctor had patiently examined and treated him. The relative kept asking the same questions repeatedly and the language used was not appropriate. The doctor told him to use proper words while speaking to him. Following this, the relative became aggressive and assaulted the doctor,” he said.
Following the assault, Jaiswal and hospital staff went to the Kolsewadi police station at around 1.30 am on Sunday to lodge a complaint. Police registered a case under Sections 118(1), 115(2), 352 and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The latest incident comes weeks after the July 6 assault at KDMC’s Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli, where Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and his associates allegedly assaulted three doctors, including a woman doctor, and two nurses. The confrontation followed a dispute after doctors advised the family of a pregnant woman to shift her to another hospital as the facility’s NICU was full. CCTV footage of the incident showed the alleged assault, triggering widespread outrage among doctors and nurses and statewide protests by resident doctors and the Indian Medical Association. The IMA later called a Maharashtra-wide strike, with doctors demanding stricter enforcement of the law protecting healthcare workers. The Bombay High Court took suo motu cognisance of the case, criticised the handling of the investigation and later ordered that the probe be transferred to a DCP-rank officer.
