Three Delhi Police personnel were injured after a group allegedly threw chilli powder into their eyes and attacked them with bricks and sticks in north Delhi’s Mukundpur area, police said.
The attack took place on August 22 after police personnel seized a motorcycle during a document check and deposited it at the Bhalswa Dairy police station.
Head Constables Dinesh and Rajesh were on routine patrol in the Janta Vihar area of Mukundpur at around 3 pm when they stopped a motorcycle for checking.
Police said the vehicle did not have valid documents. The two officers then took the motorcycle to the police station for deposition under Section 66 of the Delhi Police Act.
When they returned to the area around 30 minutes later, a group of people, including the motorcycle owner and his family members, confronted them. They questioned the police action.
The argument soon turned violent, police said.
The group allegedly threw chilli powder into the eyes of the two policemen before attacking them with bricks and sticks. Head Constable Tinu, who reached the spot to help the two officers, was also allegedly assaulted.
All three personnel were injured. HC Dinesh suffered a head injury, while the other two also received injuries in the attack.
The injured policemen were given medical treatment and are currently stable, police said.
Police said the prompt response of the personnel, along with help from local residents, led to the apprehension of one of the alleged attackers.
The accused is a 17-year-old juvenile. Further legal action is underway.
The attack comes amid heightened concerns over violence involving political and student groups in recent days.
Earlier, a clash broke out between members of the ABVP and NSUI at Pune’s COEP Technological University ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the city. The confrontation highlighted growing tensions between the two student organisations in the run-up to Gandhi’s programme.
The Bhalswa Dairy incident, however, involved an alleged attack on police personnel who were carrying out routine duty. Police are examining the role of the other people involved in the assault and further action in the case is underway.
Further legal action is underway following the attack on police personnel in Mukundpur. A 17-year-old has been apprehended in connection with the incident, and authorities are searching for the main accused and other individuals involved.
