A 25-year-old woman and her newborn child died at a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, prompting protests by her family and an inquiry into alleged medical negligence.

Kalpana Mishra, a resident of Hatwa village, was admitted to Gandhi Memorial Hospital on August 26 for delivery. She reportedly underwent a C-section at around 8:30 pm, but she and her newborn died later that night at 11:55 p.m.

Hours before her delivery, a video of Mishra pleading with her family to take her away from the hospital surfaced on social media. She was heard expressing fear about continuing treatment at the facility. “If this kind of treatment continues, these people will kill me," Kalpana is heard telling her mother in a video recorded shortly before her death. “I won’t survive. Please save me, my life is in danger," she pleaded again.

According to medical records, Mishra had a platelet count of around 30,000 per microlitre, severely high blood pressure and elevated liver enzymes. Doctors diagnosed her with a term pregnancy complicated by severe disorders and initiated treatment.

Woman’s Family Alleges Medical Negligence 

Her family, however, alleged negligence and misbehaviour by hospital staff and demanded a criminal case against those responsible. Following the allegations, Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla ordered an inquiry.

A preliminary probe led to the suspension of duty doctor Dr Sonal Agrawal from the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department and anaesthetist Dr Nidhi Pandey. Two nurses were also suspended following complaints of misbehaviour with the family.

A five-member committee has now been formed to investigate the maternal death and is expected to submit its report within three days. Post-mortem examinations of Mishra and her child were conducted by a joint team from the district hospital and medical college.

“A sad and unfortunate incident has occurred, and action has already been taken. The doctor on duty and the anesthesiologist involved have been suspended, and an inquiry committee has been constituted. Officials from Bhopal have also been included in the process; once the investigation report is received, we will gain a clearer picture of the facts and take whatever further action is necessary," Shukla said.

Shukla said further action would be taken after the inquiry report is examined.
