Got Question about the News?
A doctor was allegedly assaulted at a private hospital in Kalyan, Maharashtra, after a disagreement with a patient’s son over the way the doctor was addressed, prompting fresh concerns over the safety of medical staff.
The incident occurred at around 11 pm on Saturday while Dr Yogendra Jaiswal was treating a patient with a rib fracture. Police have registered a case in connection with the alleged assault, although the accused has not been arrested so far.
Jaiswal said the patient, identified as Jaywant Deshmukh, was being treated for a fractured rib. According to the doctor, he had explained the treatment and medication to the family but the patient’s son continued to raise the same question.
“I was examining a patient named Jaywant Deshmukh, who had a rib fracture. I explained the entire procedure to him – how the bandage should be applied and how the medication should be taken. However, his son kept asking the same question repeatedly and addressed me using disrespectful, informal language," Dr Yogendra Jaiswal told reporters.
The doctor said he then questioned the patient’s son about his manner of speaking. The exchange reportedly escalated, with the man allegedly abusing Jaiswal before returning and assaulting him.
“When I asked him why he was addressing me so informally, he retorted, ‘Who do you think you are – some big-shot doctor?’ He then went outside and started hurling abuses at me. When I objected, he came back and started beating me," he added, demanding that strict action be taken against him immediately.
The incident has added to concerns among doctors in Maharashtra, coming shortly after another alleged assault involving a doctor in the Dombivli area. Doctors have called for better security arrangements at hospitals and raised concerns over the safety of medical staff while attending to patients.

The earlier incident took place in July, when Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre was allegedly caught on camera assaulting a woman doctor in Kalyan-Dombivli. Other hospital employees and nurses were also allegedly attacked by Mhatre and his supporters. Mhatre denied assaulting the doctor and did not apologise.
Jaiswal said the latest incident had left him shaken and questioned the treatment doctors receive despite the work involved in caring for patients.
“We doctors spend years studying and working hard to save patients’ lives, yet instead of appreciation, we are getting beaten up. This is absolutely wrong," said Dr Jaiswal, who is still in shock.
The police investigation into the Kalyan incident is underway.
