India vs Sri Lanka highlights, 1st Test, Day 4: SL 84/4 at Stumps need 288 runs to win vs IND in Galle

Well, that is the end of the day's play here in Galle. The light did not seem to be enough to play on till 6:15, it seems. However, India has been mighty impressive with the ball and with the bat; there can be a few tweaks, but with the ball there is nothing to complain. Manav Suthar again has been quite magnificent. That's it from us folks. Do join us tomorrow to get further updates on the Test match.

We have about 10 minutes to go until the end of the day's play. Devdutt Padikkal has come into the attack here. He is bowling off-spin. He batted splendidly well in this Test match. Shubman Gill would want to see if he has a similar lucky charm with the ball here. Sri Lanka have batted well here for a bit.

Dhananjaya De Silva has gotten a start here. He did edge one to the slip early on in his innings, but it was a no-ball from Ravindra Jadeja. India would be hoping that he will not make them pay tomorrow with a big knock. He has this habit of scoring centuries, especially Silva in Sri Lanka; he is pretty consistent.

Kuldeep Yadav has come into attack; here it is an important spell for the wrist spinner. He has had an okayish spell in the first innings, and he would hope to do better in the second innings. One thing he is really struggling to do is pick up wickets of the batters when they are defending.

It continues to be pretty here in Galle. The play can go on till 6:15 PM IST here in Galle, and given the brightness, we might go till then. Prasidh Krishna has been brought back into the attack here. He, with his angle from over the wicket across the left-hander, can cause trouble for Sonal Dinusha here.

India has burnt a review here. Sonal Dinush tried to reverse sweep a delivery, which hit the arm band, and the close-in fielder took the catch. The Indian fielders thought it was out, and the decision was sent upstairs, but it neither took any edge or even interms of LBW, was the ball missing the stumps.

Manav Suthar has picked up the wicket of Udara here. There was a second slip in Dhruv Jurel, who was close in to take that catch, and it did seem the ball touched the grass, but the third umpire saw it as Dhruv Jurel's fingers underneath, and he was given out. It is a decision which could have gone either way. The problem Sri Lanka faces here is that the ball is turning from straight.

Sri Lanka has settled down into their batting innings nicely here. A lot was happening early on, and even that no-ball wicket made it look like Sri Lanka might get into a bit of a rut here late in the evening, but they seemed to have woken up since then and started to play with a little more caution in their approach.

We have one of those classic Jadeja no-ball moments. Dhananjaya De Silva defended one, and the ball spun off the straight and took the outside edge to the slip; the players started celebrating, and then the siren went off. How often have we seen him do this? Sri Lanka would have been four down, but not to be.

Although Manav Suthar has picked up the wicket, the hardest bowler for Sri Lanka to face would be Ravindra Jadeja. With the amount of natural variation that is offered on the surface, his accuracy will create even bigger problems for the batters. The advice, though, to the batters is to play for the straight one; if they start thinking about the one which turns, they are walking into a wicket.

There is a definite panic in the way Sri Lanka is going about things here. There just seems to be a lack of understanding of how to go about things; either they have been too much in their shells, or when they opted to play the shot, they did not pick the right one. That's how these things tend to pan out, usually in the fourth innings.

Prasidh Krishna has picked up Kamindu Mendis here. At no point did Mendis judge the bounce of the ball very well and tried to cut, but the edge went straight to the slip fielder. Sri Lanka has lost three wickets; if they are not going to be a little cautious here, it might get pretty embarrassing for them.

Mohammed Siraj is bowling his heart out here. He was the one who picked up Madhuska's wicket. The ball pitched and went so high on a surface which was not bouncing at all was a remarkable effort from Siraj. It has been tough going for them; the Indian bowlers are mixing things up pretty nicely here.

Manav Suthar cannot stop taking wickets, can he? It was his delivery which Pasindu faced, and he was trapped in front of the wicket. Pasindu is a concussion replacement for Dinesh Chandimal, and he did not offer a lot as he departed for a duck. It is the fifth wicket of the match for Suthar, and Sri Lanka has already lost two wickets here.

Mohammed Siraj is getting a bit of swing from the surface, but despite that, the ball is just not carrying to the keeper as it did in the first innings. The keeper and the slip fielders from India have to come a little forward here because of that, from their conventional positions or even from where they took their guards in the first innings.

Sri Lankan openers both Udara and Madhuska, have started solidly here. No sign of any attacking intent. The ideal approach to this chase would be not to lose too many wickets till they get to the 40th over mark and take it from there. As of now, if they go attacking, there is a high chance that they will end up losing one too many wickets.

Shubman Gill has straight away turned to Manav Suthar here with the new ball. Nothing against Suthar but he could have tried a couple of overs from Prasidh Krishna who was good in the first innings and if there is something with this new ball or indifferent bounce it will be better with this prominent seam.

We are back for the final session of the Test match. Hopefully, no rain on the cards; at least that is what India would want. It will be interesting to see how Sri Lanka will approach this innings. They can win this Test match, but they need to get the approach right here.

Play to resume at 3:30 PM IST

Well, we have some bad news, folks: the rain has stuck here in Galle, and the covers have come on. We have to go for the final day and to push for a result; Shubman Gill's captaincy will be under severly analyzed. He has to be proactive and be very attacking with his field sets.

That is quite a bit of tactical masterstroke in Sri Lanka in the end with that short-pitch bowling. The seamers have ended up picking up six wickets. The Indian team did not seen coming whatsoever. Well, India should still win this game from here on unless Sri Lanka has something up their sleeve. The new ball is going to be crucial for India.

Kuldeep is the last man to fall. He tried to get the stride forward, and Prabath Jayasuriya tossed the delivery into the rough; it turned and took the outside edge. It was a delivery which did not need to be played at, and even if he wanted to play it, there was a cut shot on offer, which he did not it is a poor judgment of length from the batter in the end.

Manav Suthar is the latest batter to fall, and it is Ashita Fernando. It is once again the short-ball tactic which is working very well. Seamers have picked up four wickets in this innings already. It does seem like Dhananjaya De Silva learnt from the first innings and is trusting his seamers a bit more.

Well, India is continuing to bat here in Galle despite the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja, and the batter who has walked into the middle is Kuldeep Yadav. It is a bit of a weird call; Mohammed Siraj can play a few more shots than Kuldeep Yadav. While the wrist spinner is more adept at staying at the crease unbeaten.

Lahiru Kumara has got another wicket here, and it is Ravindra Jadeja. He tried to cut the ball, got the upper edge, and it went straight to the deep fielder on the leg side. This is the role of Kumara in this team, with his extra pace to clean up the lower-order batters, and it did not work in the first innings but is now.

Rishabh Pant has departed here. It was a pull shot that he could not get in a good position and ended up giving a catch to the keeper Niroshan Dickwella. A sigh of relief for the bowler and the captain to go with that short-ball tactic. It looked like Pant was getting the better of it until he did not.

How often do we this happen in conditions like this? Although the ball is turning, there will be one batter who will manage to get a quick-fire cameo in the third innings, which will make the difference, and that is what we are seeing with Rishabh Pant here. Innings like this can prove to be a real game changer.

Rishabh Pant scored a half-century. It was a pretty good half-century from Pant; it was a situation which really suited him. He did not have too many things to think about; he had to go after the bowling, and that is what he did. It is a very important contribution. Can he get to a century? We have to see.

The ball is turning square now. Keshara Nuwantha has been quite good with his exploits. He has all the attributes to be a great bowler, but the issue Sri Lankan cricket has is that they play limited red-ball cricket, unlike previous generations, so his growth might be dented a little because of that.

Ravindra Jadeja in the first innings could not make many runs. Usually, he tends to take his time to get his innings going, but today he might have to be a little more attacking. We have seen KL Rahul finding it a little hard to make that adjustment. It is not for lack of shots but for lack of preparation; can Jadeja do it? We have to see.

The game is really going at a pretty high pace here in Galle. India have lost five wickets in about a session or so, and they will be hoping they will have the same luck while bowling to Sri Lanka. Rishabh Pant is still out there; he can score a cameo here. He is batting at a pretty good tempo in the middle.

Dhruve Jurel has fallen here; he tried to work the ball on the leg-side against Ashita Fernando and got the bottom edge to the keeper. It was not given out on the field and was sent upstairs, and there was a small spike despite a gap; however, they overturned the decision, and Jurel had to walk back. India lost five.

We are back for the noon session. It was a pretty good morning session from the Indian perspective; although they lost four wickets, they have scored 100 runs. Another 120-130 runs without getting bundled out; we might see India declare and push for that win. Sri Lanka would want to pick wickets and slow things down.

Well, India will be happier of both sides, despite the four wickets they have taken, with their lead over 250 here, and they would want to get to that 350-400 mark and declare. There is now enough in the surface for the bowlers to pick 10 wickets in the span of a few sessions. Do stay with us; we will be right after the break.

Devdutt Padikkal has fallen here; he went way back into the crease and could not make contact. It was a good innings, though, from him. He batted pretty well for his cameo. Dhruv Jurel is the new batter who has walked into the middle; he got a handy half-century in the first innings.

Rishabh Pant is playing a few shots here. Sri Lanka needs to be very wary here. They have to keep chipping away at the wickets to put pressure. If India keeps adding at least 30- 40 runs to each wicket, that will help India to declare early. The picking of wickets will keep the rate under check and Sri Lanka will have less time to bat.

Runs are at a premium for Sri Lanka here. India already has another 100-run lead, and Sri Lanka has to chase these runs if they have to win this game, but given how India has batted, it is very unlikely Sri Lanka would go for a win; the only option they had was to bundle out India for 100-120. Even then, it was a very slim chance.

Devdutt Padikkal is batting quite well here in the middle. He has looked at home in these Sri Lankan conditions through and through; even in the warm-up game he scored a lovely ton, and the one in the first innings was similar, if not better, and he has already breezed to 30s and has gotten himself a start.

Shubman Gill has fallen here. The batter tried to sweep, and the ball hit the pads. It was a bit of a nothing innings from Gill; he batted at a normal tempo. India are a little attacking, but still they lack the urgency which was expected in terms of pushing that for a win. In the attempt to find that right balance between attack and defence, India might be losing the plot a bit here.

Shubman Gill has walked into the middle. He has looked pretty attacking in the first innings, and he does not need any incentive to play defensively here. We might see him go for a similar approach. It is a good series for Gill to make the most of it. No disrespect to Sri Lanka, but these are the kind of tours which are pretty important for legacy.

Well, eventually it happened: Prabath Jayasuirya picked up the wicket of KL Rahul. It did look like Rahul was a bit uncomfortable going on the attacking route, but he has always had the game. The switch looked a little hard, and eventually Sri Lanka had the last laugh. A start which was not converted.

India are batting at a pretty brisk pace here. Rahul's getting away with that review seems to have injected further momentum into their batting. Meanwhile, Devdutt Padikkal at the other end is continuing from where he left off in the last innings. That review must be quite deflating for the Sri Lankans.

KL Rahul got away here; that looked pretty plumb, but somehow he himself reluctantly took a review, and it showed the ball going over the stumps. It did look pretty plumb, but the technology said otherwise. The Sri Lankan fielders looked a little flabbergasted at that; there will be a few discussions after the game about it.

Well, we corrected our previous update; it did seem like KL Rahul was going to play within himself, but after that he charged down the track against Prabath Jayasuriya to hit a massive six and then reverse-swept another one for a boundary against Keshara Nuwantha. Now the Indian opener is on the move.

KL Rahul is in no hurry here in the middle. He is batting each ball on its merits, so it seems like India wants to take their time and let that seam flatten. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has brought Prabath Jayasuriya into the attack. Similar to the first innings, he might have to do plenty of bowling in this innings too.

Ashita Fernando has started well here; he has hit the right lines and lengths. To be fair to him, he has bowled well through this Test match to be fair to him. If anything, it did seem like Dhananjaya De Silva criminally underused him. He might bowl a little more here because of that indifferent bounce the surface is offering in this innings.

It will be very interesting to see how KL Rahul will approach this innings. Usually he is pretty tidy with the way he goes about things, but today he might have to switch to his ODI mode. Not the T20 one, but the ODI style of innings would do the job for him. Devdutt Padikkal at the other end has already played a couple of lovely boundaries.

Ashitha Fernando has picked up the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Here, it was a short and wide delivery which the batter tried to cut and ended up edging to the keeper. It is a big wicket for Sri Lanka up early. Jaiswal could have taken the game away from Sri Lanka pretty quickly. Keshara Nuwantha has taken the new ball from the other end.

It is a beautiful day here in Galle; the sun is out, and everyone hopes the weather will hold up. India will have only one agenda in mind, which is to maximise the two sessions today. 250 runs from here on will make it very hard for Sri Lanka to get in the final innings, but given the nature of the pitch, we have to see how many wickets India will lose before that.

“It’s a very good feeling to get a wicket with the first ball. It gives you a lot of confidence throughout the game,” he said.

“My plan was pretty simple – to bowl in a good area, right length and right speed. Here we got a lot of purchase from the wicket,” he added.

“He can land a ball on one spot. His consistency is world-class. So I want to learn from him that no matter what a batsman does, how long can you bowl on a spot and induce a false shot. There’s a lot to learn,” Suthar told reporters on Monday.

“India will have to be brave with their declaration. They will have to give enough time to the bowlers. Maybe try and look at a minimum of 90-100 overs. To do that, India will have to declare at somewhere between 350-375. In worst case scenario, if Sri Lanka get to 350-375, give credit to Sri Lanka, but India will have to be brave,” Pujara added.

“India will have to make their intentions very clear. Not a lot of time is left in the Test match. Also, you have to keep an eye on the forecast. You can’t ignore it. To qualify for the WTC final, they will have to win both the Test matches. To do that, they will have to be a little brave and a little more aggressive,” Pujara told on Cricinfo.

Teams have scored 600 after winning the toss and batting first, and sometimes they have also been bowled out for 120. So clearly, there are two types of pitches here. The one today is looking very good to me. It looks as if the entire pitch is covered with grass, so there are no rough or patchy areas. If you look at it, the pitch has a very beautiful appearance, which makes me feel that batting should be relatively easy. This is not a rank turner, so let me make that clear first. If you win the toss, you would want to bat first, but for the first 30-40 minutes, you will have to play carefully against the seamers because the pitch hasn't yet lost its colour, which means there is still a little bit of moisture. Whenever there is grass, you can get some lateral movement simply because of the green grass. So this is a pitch where you want to bat first and put up a big score, because batting in the fourth innings in Galle is very difficult. the average score here is around 120-130. So the toss is very important, as always, and both teams will want to bat first and make the most of this beautiful pitch.

Hello and welcome to our live blog between India and Sri Lanka for the fourth day of the first Test. The only thing that can stop India from winning this game is rain. They have a pretty good lead in these conditions, and all they need to do is bat for a couple of sessions and throw Sri Lanka into bat.
